How would you describe your style of cooking?
“I would describe my cooking as a fusion. I like a lot of different flavours and spices. I like a bit of everything, particularly Asian cuisine but also Caribbean, Mediterranean and Indian.
My aunty Georgi, who passed away, also was a big inspiration. She ran various pop-up Caribbean restaurants in Brighton and when I was little and visited her, I would help out and work with her in the kitchen.”
What is your earliest cooking memory?
“My earliest memories of cooking are with my mum. Most nights she would have me helping in the kitchen, whether it was peeling carrots for her, or mixing ingredients. I really enjoyed these times and they definitely sparked my love of food.”
MasterChef turns 20 this year – What are your earliest MasterChef memories? What kind of impact do you think it’s had on you or the country’s approach to food?
“I started watching when Loyd Grossman presented the first version of MasterChef and have watched since it came back with John and Gregg so 20 years. When I was younger, I really enjoyed the excitement of culinary challenges, the creativity of the dishes, and the intense moments during the judging. The tantalising dishes and passionate chefs left a lasting impression on me and my love for cooking and food.
I think MasterChef has undeniably influenced culinary trends and heightened public interest in cooking. The emphasis on creativity and skill has inspired me, and I’m sure many others, to explore diverse cuisines and improve their cooking abilities. I also think it has proven the popularity of food and cooking works as a form of entertainment.”
Why did you enter MasterChef?
“It was actually my wife, Hannah, who entered me on the show without me knowing! The first I knew about it was when I got a call to discuss my application!
My wife believes in my culinary skills and would like to see me showcase my them on a platform like MasterChef. It’s nice to know she thinks I have what it takes to excel in the competition, and it gave me that boost I needed to go for it.”
What is your food dream?
“My food dream would be to open my own small restaurant where I could showcase the dishes I love to cook inspired by my travels and foods I have tasted. It would be a place where my culinary creativity and passion could come to life, offering a unique and intimate dining experience.”[1]
