Elizabeth "Beth" Kirby (July 2, 1983 – March 30, 2022)[1] was a contestant on Season 4 of MasterChef. She ranked in 13th place. On March 30, 2022, she passed away at the age of 38. The cause of death has not been disclosed, but it is implied that she lost her battle trying to deal with mental illness. [2]

Personality[]

Beth displayed a compassionate side when she was first chosen over Luca to move on to the MasterChef kitchen. She was seen comforting him before being asked to join the other remaining contestants. She was seen as emotionally frail, most noticeably breaking down and crying during a confrontation with Natasha when the former referred to their team's cauliflower puree as "disgusting". Despite this, she was shown to perform reasonably well under pressure, as she led herself and Natasha to safety during the Las Vegas burger Team Challenge, despite their conflict in the previous Team Challenge. She was seen getting along best with Jessie, Bri, and Eddie, while having conflicts with Natasha, and being heavily disliked by Krissi.

Episode 1[]

Beth wasn't featured in the first episode.

Episode 2[]

Beth wasn't featured in the second episode.

Episode 3[]

Her audition dish wasn't shown in the episode but still got an apron, in the boot camp challenge she was one of the 8 contestants where the judges were unsure about moving forward to the competition, she was in the final 2 with Luca, but in the end the 2 of them were accepted into the Masterchef kitchen.

Episode 4[]

Beth's dish wasn't shown for The Mystery Box Challenge or The Langoustine Challenge.

Episode 5[]

Beth was chosen to join the Red Team, led by Jessie to cook for 300 students at Emperor Elementary School. With 58% of the votes for the Red Team, she and other members of the team were exempt from the Pressure Test.

Episode 6[]

In the Japanese Mystery Box, she made a Sesame Crusted Black Cod with Caramelized Beets, Cauliflower and a Miso Vinaigrette. Her dish was selected in the Top 3 with James and Luca, but the win went to Luca.

She later was not shown in the Cupcake Elimination challenge.

Episode 7[]

In this team challenge, the teams were tasked to prepare 101 New York strip steaks with a sauce and two sides of fresh produce for firemen. Beth was chosen to join the red team, led by Bime. With 33 out of the 101 votes from the firemen. Her team lost and were to participate in the pressure test.

In the pressure test, Beth, Natasha, Luca and Kathy were to replicate an Eggs Benedict dish. Because the judges couldn't decide which of the 4 had the worst Eggs Benedict, the 4 had to compete in another pressure test in the next episode.

Episode 8[]

In the continued pressure test, 2 teams comprised of Beth and Natasha (blue) and Luca and Kathy (blue) were to create a burger at Gordon's BurGR restaurant in Las Vegas for the surviving home cooks to judge on. The blue team made a Beef Burger with Prosciutto, Goat Cheese, Arugula and an Aioli. Despite the conflicting ideas on the blue team, they were saved over the red team and exempt from the final pressure test.

Episode 9[]

Beth's dish was not chosen in the Foreign Foods Mystery Box.

In the elimination challenge, Lidia Bastianich (Joe's mom) made a special appearance teaching her and the other home cooks how to make agnolotti, after mystery box winner Eddie chose the pasta. Beth made a Cheese and Herb Agnolotti with Mushrooms. Because her agnolotti was undercooked she was sent to the bottom 4 along with Lynn, Jonny and Howard. She and Jonny were however saved over Lynn and Howard.

Episode 10[]

Beth's Team won the team challenge and saved from pressure test

Episode 11[]

In the Pig Head Mystery Box, Beth made a Pork dish with Black Eyed Peas, Cornbread and Collards. Her dish was not chosen.

In the crab elimination challenge, Beth made a Mascarpone Crab Cake with a Peach and Avocado Salsa. Her crab cakes were unfortunately raw and inedible, sending her to the bottom 3 with Luca and Krissi, ultimately being eliminated and sent home.

Beth appeared win the finale, cheering for Luca and Natasha.

Post MasterChef[]

  • After her appearance, Beth became a food blogger, won awards for her food photography and taught cookery workshops. She offered business advice to a network of creatives and entrepreneurs, until she passed away on March 30, 2022, at the age of 38, because of her mental illness.

  • As of season 10, Beth still holds the record for most wins out of a contestant to finish in 13th place, with 3 wins.
    • She is tied with Ralph (season 9) and Sam (season 10) for this record.
  • Beth is the third former contestant to have appeared on the U.S. version to pass away, following Josh (season 3), and Ben (Junior season 6).
    • In addition she is the first woman to pass away in the U.S. Version.
