Hailing from Wigan in the UK, Deepali Behar moved to Secret Harbour, WA, four years ago with then boyfriend Jordan.
A dentist by trade, Deepali once had a research project published in the respected European Journal of Paediatric Dentistry.
Although she loves what she does, she’s now ready to lay it all on the line to vie for the title of Australia’s MasterChef.
Despite the distance, Deepali remains in close contact with mum Ila, dad Shantu, sister Anisha, 28, and brother Neilan, 17. While her parents are both of Indian heritage, they were born and raised in East Africa (mum in Uganda and dad in Tanzania), giving Deepali’s cooking an exotic twist.
Deepali considers her mum to be the best cook she knows and feels lucky to have learned from her.
A fan of the Western Australian climate and lifestyle, the only thing missing for Deepali is authentic Indian cuisine. After moving to Australia, Deepali became serious about her cooking. It was a way to recreate her mum's much-loved home-cooked flavours.
Husband Jordan, whom Deepali married in 2012, is her guinea pig in the kitchen and he has no complaints.
“The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach,” jokes Deepali.
She also loves to cook for friends and says: “You’ve got to cook with love, if you are in a bad mood, it won’t taste the same.”
As a Hindu, Deepali has never eaten beef, but is happy to cook with it while on MasterChef Australia.
Deepali's dream is to open a restaurant featuring delicious Indian food influenced by her Gujarati heritage. She would love her mum to be a part of it.
“Working with my mum by my side in our own restaurant, I’d love to watch people smile with delight as they taste our food.”
A creative soul with an outgoing personality, Deepali enjoys sewing, painting, drawing and loves exploring WA’s beaches along with her two beautiful dogs, Pepper and Oscar.[1]
