A Piece of Cake is the ninth episode of Season 7 of MasterChef. It was aired on July 27, 2016 on FOX. On that episode, a sweet 16 birthday party was hosted, both teams performed very poorly due to making simple mistakes, one team won by a landslide, birthday cake was the main dish, and an early favorite was shown to the door.
Team Challenge[]
The Top 12 are seen entering into the MasterChef Kitchen to face their next team challenge. The Judges then explain that the Top 12 would cook for the all the guests of this special occasion; which just so happens to be a group of teenagers celebrating their sweet 16.
Like the last 2 team challenges, the top 12 would be split into 2 teams. As Katie & Eric were the winners of the previous challenge, they were then assigned as Team Captains. Katie chooses Brandi, David, Nathan, Diamond, & Andrea for the Blue Team; whereas Eric chooses Shaun, Tanorria, Dan, Terry, & Alejandro.
Both Teams then decided to serve the Following Menu:
- Pan Seared Chicken with Candied Bacon, Sweet Potato Mash and a Balsamic Glaze
- Grilled Shrimp with Coconut Rice, Sugar Snap Peas, & Chili Lime Sauce.
After the Challenge, it is revealed that the winners of the challenge were the Blue Team; whereas the Red Team had to face the Pressure Test
Pressure Test[]
As the Blue team went up into the Balcony, the Red Team remained below in their black aprons. The 6 were tasked to make a Birthday Cake with a minimum of 3 layers, much to Alejandro's fear; not only due to the fact that he's not a baker, but also because of how Christina of all people will be the most judgmental of all 3 judges when it comes to Cakes in General. After the test, Shaun had the best out of the 6 so he was saved first, then Terry followed by Dan, leaving Tanorria, Eric and Alejandro in the bottom 3 much to everyone's surprise. Alejandro in the end was eliminated because of a simple mistake of placing the frosting whilst the cake was still warm, resulting it to melt upon impact.
